Treating Pain Without Surgery

When conventional medical treatments fail or do not provide pain relief, interventional procedures can be considered. Before you consider surgical intervention. These are just three of the many options for pain relief at Florida Medical Pain Management.

Nerve Block

An injection called a nerve block targets the nerve or pain receptor that is responsible for your pain. An anesthetic medication is used to block the nerve signal so that it doesn’t reach your brain. The nerve signal is blocked by the injection, so your brain won’t feel the pain.

A nerve block usually contains an anesthetic mixed with a steroid, which reduces inflammation and provides long-lasting pain relief.

Nerve blocks can be used to relieve pain from many conditions. These are two examples of nerve blocks:

Blockage of the Lumbar Sympathetic Nerve

To relieve foot and leg pain caused by complex regional pain syndrome or vascular insufficiency, target nerves in the lower back.

Blockage of the Genicular Nerve

This nerve block is used to relieve pain associated with arthritis.

Root Block

Root block, another type of nerve block, targets specific nerve roots. While you may have many nerves running through your body, they don’t all travel along your spine in a random fashion. They travel in bundles within the spinal canal.

Root block is done by injecting local anesthetic with or without steroids into or near the nerve root. You will experience a greater range of relief.

Epidural Injection

An epidural injection involves injecting medication into an area in your spine known as the epidural cavity. An epidural injection can provide enough pain relief for you to begin a physical therapy program. This helps reduce pain and preserve mobility.

An epidural steroid injection can be used to treat a wide range of back conditions, including:

  • Herniated disc
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spondylolisthesis
